Abstract

This article was produced as part of the research done by the group from the CNPQ research directory entitled “urban ideas and architectural languages” that seeks to catalog the urban plans and architectural languages of São Luís do Maranhão in the 20th century. In this article, we highlight the modernities in the architecture of the early 20th century, with influences from the art deco movement in Europe and Brazil, which arrived in the historic center of the capital, São Luís, through the construction of the headquarters of federal institutions and spread throughout the city. in residential and commercial projects such as the Palácio do Comércio, today the central hotel, the Roxy cinema, the C&A and Sulacap building, among others. The architectural details of these examples express the modernities of the new public, commercial and residential buildings built in concrete, with the implantation valued in corner lots, geometric facades with references to aerodynamics, neutral colors, with the insertion of artistic elements and pediments highlighted in lines vertical with typography of elongated letters, typical of art deco. Finally we conclude by calling attention to the importance of preserving the 20th century architectural collection in São Luís do Maranhão, inserted in the colonial ensemble, which has no legal protection.
